The Blackcoat’s Daughter went into development in 2015 but it wasn’t widely released until A24 took over in 2017. The film focused on the supernatural but it has a heavy psychological tone.
The horror movie centers on a Kat (Shipka), a freshman at a prestigious Catholic school in upstate New York. During a week-long break, Kat and another student named Rose (Boynton) are the only two who aren’t picked up by their parents. They are forced to stay at school with the nuns but Kat starts to act very strangely after she learns about the academy’s history with devil-worshipping. Matters become worse after the nuns find out that Kat’s parents were killed in an accident.
The Blackcoat’s Daughter also features a second timeline with Emma Roberts’ character, Joan. As time goes on, a major plot twist reveals Joan’s connection to Kat’s story. The film is extremely grim but has been praised for its innovative storytelling.
Director Osgood Perkins will soon debut his new horror movie, Gretel & Hansel, in 2020. Karina Shipka can be found starring in Netflix’s hit series, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which is expected to return with new episodes in the coming months.
