Stranger Things and the 20 best Netflix shows to watch for Halloween 2019
13. Penny Dreadful
When a show has Frankenstein and his monster, Dorian Grey, witches, and monsters, it’s pretty much required viewing for Halloween. And since Penny Dreadful has all those things and more, it is a must-watch for the scariest day of the year.
The show follows a number of different characters through their storylines but the main ones are Frankenstein and his monster, John Clare, Dorian Gray and his lover, Lily, Ethan Chandler and Vanessa Ives, and Sir Malcolm.
The show starts off with Vanessa enlisting Ethan Chandler to do some work for her which ends up being infiltrating a vampire haven to search for Sir Malcolm’s daughter and Vanessa’s friend, Mina. When they end up killing a vampire, they get Dr. Frankenstein to examine it. But Frankenstein, of course, isn’t just a regular doctor. He’s also working to bring a dead body back to life!
But this isn’t the “monster” you might know from the book. John Clare, as he’s known, is an outcast but has the sweetest soul. He takes care of anyone in need. but, unfortunately, is often preyed upon by people looking to exploit him.
And then there is Dorian Gray who has never met anyone he couldn’t charm. But when he meets Lily, a former sex worker, he becomes enraptured with her and brings her into his home to live. Little does she know about his biggest secret.
The show goes onto follow the characters as they come upon evermore spookier and haunting creatures and supernatural beings, and Vanessa becomes more and more overwhelmed with occult images and powers she can’t necessarily control. They eventually even meet Dracula himself. Do you really need to know anymore to realize it’s the perfect show to watch on Halloween?
All three seasons are currently on Netflix to stream.
