14. You

If you’re more interested in creepy, real-world horror on Halloween, You is definitely what you want to watch. Instead of paranormal beings, guts and gore, or serial killers, You is about toxic obsession and stalking.

The series follows Joe Goldberg, a bookstore employee in New York City who, after meeting a writer, Guinevere Beck, becomes completely obsessed with her. He goes on to track her social media and use other tech to make sure he knows where she is at all times and so they can ultimately be together. He even goes into her apartment while she’s not there. Scary!

But there are times when he gets lucky too. Guinevere ends up drunk at a subway platform and falls onto the tracks. Joe happens to be there (because he’s stalking her!) and saves her life. Through that interaction, he’s able to steal her phone and in turn, have access to everything she does.

Grateful for him saving her life, she goes to the bookshop to thank him where he asks her out. But he must deal with her boyfriend before that can happen. And he does…rather violently. At first, he just locks him up, but he ultimately does kill him.

Joe isn’t the only villain Guinevere must deal with. She also has a creepy professor making advances towards her. But he’s easier to get rid of than Joe (although she doesn’t know Joe’s a threat yet). She threatens to expose her professor for the creep he is and get him fired from his job.

Once they do end up getting together, it’s not as easy as Joe initially thought. Their first date goes less than great, and Guinevere’s friend, Peach, is suspicious of him and gets in the way.

The twists and turns the series takes as it goes on are unexpected, to say the least. The lengths Joe goes to to “win” Guinevere and have her to himself are extraordinary and definitely frightening. You might not want to watch this one in the dark.
