15. Mystery Science Theater 3000
Do you love to watch B (or lower) sci-fi/horror movies with your friends and make fun of them while you watch? That is the whole premise of Mystery Science Theater 3000 just with a twist.
In the original 1999 series, hosts Joel and Mike along with their robot companions are forced by their captors to watch B movies to test what will drive them (Joel and Mike) insane. In the new version, Jonah is imprisoned on the spacecraft Satellite of Love by a group of mad scientists and is forced to watch the movies.
To try to keep their sanity, the guys build themselves a couple of robots. They include Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot, Gypsy, and Cambot. The robots watch the movies along with them and make hilarious comments at the less than stellar production value and the questionable acting skills.
But it’s not just watching movies and wisecracks. The hosts also leave the theater and perform sketches that make fun of the films they just viewed.
While this isn’t the scary or creepy show you might think of when you’re looking for something to watch on Halloween, it still fits the bill. With the show taking place in space, robots being part of the cast, and the movies being mostly awful, it’s a fun way to spend the night. The movies are so bad that it might just scare you a little bit.
And because Netflix has both the 90s version and the new MST3K Gauntlet, you can choose which version you prefer or make a night of it and watch both. There is one season of the original and two seasons of the new version with Jonah Ray, Patton Oswalt, and Felicia Day.
