16. Bates Motel

What says Halloween more than a show based on one of the scariest movies of all time?

Bates Motel is the prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho showing how Norman ends up becoming the deeply disturbed man who keeps his dead mother in his house that we see in the film. The show follows Norma and Norman Bates as they buy a motel after the death of Norman’s father.

Everything seems fine until the former owner of the motel breaks in, attacks Norma, and then Norman knocks him out and Norma stabs him to death. They don’t call the police but dispose of the body themselves. But when the police notice the man is missing, they must stop them from looking too far into the case. And that’s just season 1!

The show goes on to show other murders, Norman getting use to his life in a new town and a new school, and Norma doing anything and everything to keep the motel up and running. We also see Norman come to realize that his mental health is slowly crumbling and doing whatever he can to keep it under control. How Norman’s father died also comes into question.

If you’re looking for a psychological thriller that will scare the crap out of you this Halloween, you really can’t do better with Bates Motel. It’s a spin on a classic that, at times, can be just as frightening as the original. It has a killer cast (no pun intended) with Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga playing Norman and Norma, respectively, and Max Theriot, Olivia Cooke, and Nestor Carbonell making up the supporting cast.
