Stranger Things and the 20 best Netflix shows to watch for Halloween 2019
17. Hemlock Grove
If you want something a little more bizarre (watch one of the characters turn into a werewolf and you’ll know what I mean) with your horror, Hemlock Grove is the way to go. The show follows the people of Hemlock Grove and the strange happenings in the town. What may appear to be a normal town in Pennsylvania is anything but.
There is a huge disparity between the rich and the poor in Hemlock Grove due to a now-closed steel mill that many people relied on for their income. But that’s the least of the town’s worries.
The show starts off with Roman Godfrey, the richest kid in town, befriending the new kid, Peter Rumancek. But what looks like just another teen drama turns supernatural when it’s shown that Roman is a vampire and Peter is a werewolf. But when multiple murders hit Hemlock Grove, rumors begin to spread and the new friends (or frenemies) must figure out what’s going on in their town. What they find out is much darker and more mysterious than either of them could have imagined.
One of the biggest mysteries is the town’s major sources of employment, Godfrey Institute for Biomedical Technologies and Hemlock Acres Hospital. The Institute is run by Roman’s mom, Olivia Godfrey, whose life mostly consists of secrets. The main psychiatrist (because with all this drama in town, people need some help) is Olivia’s dead husband’s brother, Dr. Norman Godfrey.
But the vampires, werewolves, and the weird institute is not all that makes Hemlock Grove unique. There is also Norman’s daughter who claims she was impregnated by an angel. Christina, who soon becomes Peter’s girlfriend and looks to be completely “normal”, also has a significant role in the show.
The series goes on to see a cult come to town that is hellbent on destroying all the supernatural creatures in town. On top of that, Peter and Roman are trying not to become the worst versions of themselves and turn into ruthless killers.
Hemlock Grove is a great show to watch on Halloween as long as you don’t take it too seriously. It’s like a teen drama and a soap opera mixed together with all the twist and turns and absurd reveals that make those genres so entertaining. All the episodes are currently available on Netflix.
