19. The Vampire Diaries
Oh, The Vampire Diaries! What a show. It takes so many unexpected, weird, and sometimes bizarre turns over its eight seasons. With the vampires, witches, ghosts, and werewolves, you’re not going to find a better show about teenagers (and vampires pretending to be them) than The Vampire Diaries.
The show takes place in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, a town that seems to be filled with supernatural inhabitants. The main character is Elena Gilbert who lost both her parents in a car accident and is trying to figure out her life. All seems to be going normally until she meets Stefan Salvatore and falls in love with him. At first, she doesn’t know that he’s a 162-year-old vampire, but honestly, she doesn’t seem that bothered once she finds out.
But that’s not even the strangest part. Stefan’s older brother, Damon, comes back to town and has plans to bring back Katherine Pierce, the brothers’ past love (That’s right. Both of them have been with her). And guess what? She happens to look exactly like Elena.
This leads to the love triangle of the century where Damon and Stefan are both fighting for Elena’s affections. And when Katherine is brought back, they end up protecting Elena from her evil schemes. The audience is also shown Stefan and Damon’s past with a series of flashbacks sprinkled throughout the seasons.
Elena’s friends and classmates are also brought into the mix when they either form a relationship with one of the Salvatore brothers or become a supernatural being themselves. Many of the characters either come out as witches or are turned into vampires or werewolves as the series goes on.
If you don’t take the show too seriously, are just looking to ship some couples, or are looking for a show that’s only a little spooky, The Vampire Diaries is perfect for all those things.
