4. American Horror Story

If you’re looking for real horror that might keep you up at night, American Horror Story is the way to go. And you can pick the way you’d like to be scared depending on the season you choose to watch.

Want to be scared to death about people breaking into your house and an incredibly disturbing man in a plastic suit? Season 1 is your jam. More interested in asylum/religious horror? Season 2 is your thing. Looking for something more kitschy and some witchy goodness (or are you a fan of Stevie Nicks)? American Horror Story: Coven is a must.

Or maybe circuses and carnivals are more your thing? Season 4 is what you need to check out. There is also a creepy hotel season, the haunted Roanoke season, the cult season which plays on the election, and of course, the Apocalypse.

Wherever your fear lies or whatever type of horror you enjoy, there is a season of American Horror Story for you. I don’t normally love mental health/asylum horror, but Asylum is definitely my fave season if only for the musical episode alone.

But whether you’re looking to be scared the night of Halloween or looking to catch up on the season you missed in preparation for the premiere of the new season (named 1984), American Horror Story is worth the watch. It does have its less than great moments (do we need so much rape??), but the moments when it’s great, it’s really brilliant.

If the plot doesn’t make you want to watch it, the cast certainly will. With Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Lady Gaga, Sarah Paulson, and Angela Bassett in the show, it’s difficult for it not to be extraordinary.
