You were sittin’ around browsing Hulu with your friends the other daaaaaaay…And you noticed a show called Letterkenny. But what could a show named Letterkenny possibly be about? Continue reading to find out.

As the first episode indicates, Letterkenny consists of hicks, skids, hockey players and Christians. Six seasons of their adventures are streaming on Hulu right now, and the show will be considered a Hulu Original when season seven kicks off in October.

For a little background on the setting, Letterkenny is a redneck town in good ol’ Canada. Jared Keeso created the show and plays the main character, Wayne. Keeso loosely based the show on his hometown Listowel, Ontario where he grew up. Here’s everything you need to know about Letterkenny. Hold my spitter…

Use Subtitles

It will take you a few episodes or seasons to understand the fast-paced slang that molds the entirety of Letterkenny. Do yourself a favor and watch it with subtitles until you know what everyone is saying, including the mumbling rants McMurray spits out. Soon enough you’ll be saying pitter-patter, “how’r ya now?” and “ferda,” but until then, stick to the subtitles.

The Slang

Oh, my gourd…there is a lot of slang. Here are some of the major ones and their English translations.

Pitter patter: Let’s get to it.
Texas Sized 10-4: OK.
Pracky: Practice.
Big Shoots: Someone trying to be tough.
Big Shooter: Friend.
Shneef: Cocaine.
Electric Lettuce: Marijuana.
Degens: Degenerates. Folks who live up north and are the worst.
Rocket: An attractive person.
Schmelt and Schmeltz: A rookie on a hockey team.
10-ply: How soft someone is… like super soft toilet paper.
Pert Near: Pretty near.
Tilly Time: Fight on the ice.
Scrap: A fight involving two people.
Donnybrook: A fight involving more than two people.

The Main Characters

The show centers around Wayne, his sister, Katy Kat, and his best buds, Dary and Squirrely Dan. Wayne is the toughest man in Letterkenny. He has a farm and runs a produce stand, loves his dogs, and is very protective of his sister. Katy is Wayne’s little sister. She doesn’t wear a lot of clothes in the first two seasons, but don’t let her looks distract you. She’s a tough, smart woman, who is a fundamental component to the group.

Dary likes to wear a onesie, eat yogurt and is a fabulous line dancer. Dan doesn’t understand when it is and isn’t appropriate to fart, appreciates many people, and is a fantastic storyteller. He also attends a women’s studies class in the later seasons, frequently quotes Professor Tricia, and is a definite ally and feminist. They are a great group of friends who constantly support each other, joke around, and protect Letterkenny.

The Side Characters

Every character is pure gold in Letterkenny. Pastor Glen is a flamboyant Christian who loves to preach on his soapbox. He’s also a jack of all trades and seems to work everywhere in Letterkenny.

Gail is the local bartender who makes a lot of people feel awkward by her constant sexual talk. The meth kids, or skids, are led by Stewart who is loyally followed by Roald. The skids love to dance, play video games, and use and sell drugs.

The hockey players, Reilly and Jonesy, are best friends and are both dating Katy for a long time. They have their own hockey bro language and will introduce you to the word “ferda.” You’ll also meet people from The Rez, the French doppelgängers, Shoresy, and many more.

If you decide to watch it for the first time, don’t stop watching after the Fartbook episode (Season 1, Episode 3). To be fair, not everyone finds farts funny, so you will either love or hate that episode, but that’s arguably the most divisive episode. Nevertheless, Letterkenny is an extremely funny show with very dynamic characters. Try to catch up before Season 7 releases in October and enjoy your time in Letterkenny! Over and out.

All seasons of Letterkenny are currently streaming on Hulu. Season 7 premieres on October 14, 2019. For more on this Hulu Original, follow us on the Hulu Watcher Twitter Account @HuluWatcherFS or on the Hulu Watcher Facebook Page.
