With Workin’ Moms season 2 out this month, you’ll want to binge-watch season 1. Here are five reasons you should be watching Workin’ Moms right now.

The Canadian sitcom, Workin’ Moms, will be making its return to Netflix on July 25 for season 2. Season 1 has been streaming since February but has kept a rather quiet buzz.

I was initially put off by the show’s title because I didn’t think it would relate to me. After hearing a high recommendation from a friend I decided to give episode 1 a try and afterward binged the entire season in one night.

What started off as background noise, Workin’ Moms suddenly became a show I was engrossed in, needing to know the fate of these characters. Still not convinced? Here’s a breakdown of why you should watch the series:

Created, written, directed by, and starring a woman

Catherine Reitman created Workin’ Moms, wrote it, directed it, and starred in it. Some might remember her as Maureen Ponderosa in It’s Always Sunny, but Workin’ Moms is where she truly shines. It’s impressive to see her juggle so many hats and come out with a quality product.

Not to mention that the four women the show revolves around are written realistically, all with unique but raw and relatable personalities. I believe part of that is due to having a woman behind the scenes who can lend her own experience and voice to the project.

Remarkable ensemble cast

As mentioned, Workin’ Moms centers around four women, each unique in their own way in regards to personality and lifestyle. Because of the variety in leading ladies, you’re guaranteed to find one that you can relate to.

I personally related to Reitman’s character because her dynamic with her husband reminded me of my own relationship as well as the way she carries herself and handles difficult situations. While one may stand out to you, these actors really do put their all into these roles, making it hard not become invested in each storyline even if you relate to one more than the other.

About more than just parenting

The reason I initially didn’t plan on watching a show called Workin’ Moms was because I’m not a parent. I didn’t think this was a show made for me or that would be of any interest. Needless to say, I was wrong.

When my friend pitched it to me, she told me it was more about relationships, work/life balance, and figuring out your identity. Those really are the core themes of the show. You watch these women seek out balance and figure out what will bring them happiness in a realistic and vulnerable way.

Strong female friendships

I’m immediately drawn to any series that focuses on a strong friendship. As a 20-something I also appreciate shows the depict realistic adult friendships and how they evolve the older you become.

These ladies don’t spend every waking moment together on screen and most of the time they’re involved in their own independent storyline, which is true to life. However, they’re always available to deliver harsh truths, give advice, and be supportive of each other no matter how much life gets in the way.

Perfect balance of humor and heart

While labeled as a comedy, there are moments in this show that hit too close to home. Without going into much detail to avoid spoilers, some of these characters face difficult situations that affect both them individually as well as those close to them.

However, the show never dwells too long on tragedy, and I would say the show is rather light-hearted. Yet, the writers perfectly time serious scenes so that they hit with great impact making you crave the next episode.

Needless to say I’m highly invested in these characters and cannot wait for season 2 to drop. I would highly recommend giving the show a try so you can be all caught up for July 25. If you’re looking for more slice-of-life styled sitcoms with a strong female cast, this is a must-watch for you.
