The Bravest Knight: Episode one ‘Cedric And The Troll’ recap
By Paul Zuniga
Hulu’s groundbreaking series, The Bravest Knight, is now streaming on Hulu. Check out our recap of episode one below.
In the premiere episode of Hulu Originals: The Bravest Knight, audiences are introduced to the main characters of the series. There are many to name, though the story seems to focus on Nia (Storm Reid), Sir Cedric (T.R. Knight), and Prince Andrew (Wilson Cruz) — a trio who make up a somewhat unconventional family.
For those who don’t know, The Bravest Knight centers a pumpkin farmer who marries a prince and adopts a young girl along the way. The series follows Sir Cedric’s adventures to becoming a knight while he teaches Nia about the ins and outs of not-so-knighthood.
To teach his daughter about all the important lessons that he learned throughout his journey to knighthood, Sir Cedric recalls his adventures as a child. One of Cendric’s first missions includes helping a troll and stopping a witch.
In “Cedric And The Troll”, the young Cedric (Chance Hurstfield) encounters Grunt (Bobby Moynihan) extorting travelers walking over his troll. Most trolls dwell under bridges but Grunt has been forced to take refuge under a tree instead, all because a bigger troll has claimed it.
When Cedric and Grunt meet, the pumpkin farmer is skeptical of the latter’s intentions. Trolls are supposed to be these malevolent creatures but Grunt is different. He isn’t violent or nasty, he’s actually a nice troll. Once he and Cedric become acquainted, they continue on together.

On their walk, Cedric and Grunt find a woman resembling Rapunzel trapped in a tower. She claims to need assistance, asking that the duo help rescue her. Cedric sees the opportunity to prove himself as a knight and jumps into action. Both he and Grunt climb the rope of hair but are surprised to find that a witch is hiding in the tower.
Once the facade is exposed, Trulla (Donna Murphy) the witch dumps her new victims in a pit alongside other captives. Grunt and Cedric are shocked by the turn of events, though they remain hopeful. The other prisoners, however, aren’t too thrilled about Grunt.
The child prisoners notice that Grunt is a troll and immediately call attention to it. They assume he’s going to become violent and attack them but Grunt eases the tension by cracking a few jokes. Cedric eventually comes to Grunt’s defense, acknowledging how the troll is one of the good guys. They then craft an ingenious plan to get out of the hole.
What’s hilarious is that Grunt’s affinity for mud is the key to escaping. He winds up covering himself in mud as trolls will do, which sticks out to Cedric. He realizes that mud can be used as a camouflage to conceal themselves, tricking Trulla out of her tower. Their plan requires a new victim to put themselves in harm’s way but it bears fruit in the end.
The newly-formed gang covers themselves in mud to make it appear as if the pit is empty. When Trulla dumps another prisoner into the trap, she notices the rest are gone. The evil witch doesn’t waste any time jumping into the hole to check, of course, it’s only to be fooled by the kids she imprisoned. They’re still outmatched at this point but Grunt covers Trulla in mud before she can escape, trapping her for the knights.
Back in the present, Sir Cedric wraps up his story by informing his daughter that he had many more adventures he wishes to share with her. This is presumably a tease for the following episodes which will depict Cedric regaling his daughter with tales of his knightly adventures. Keep in mind that Cedric and Nia could also go on a heroic journey of their own.
