Fear The Walking Dead season 5, episode 2 recap: The Hurt That Will Happen
By Paul Zuniga
The most recent season of Fear The Walking Dead has sent the show’s survivors into a radioactive zone. In Season 5, Episode 2 “The Hurt That Will Happen”, Morgan and the others learn exactly what kind of dangers lie within this wasteland.
On the latest episode of Fear The Walking Dead, Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) kicked everything off by putting his own life on the line. He didn’t step in front of a herd of walkers or attempt a suicide mission but he might as well have.

In an effort to locate another working airplane, Victor goes to Daniel’s encampment in search of help. He arrives at the camp gates knowing full well that his life could be forfeit just for showing his face but does so anyway.
When Victor arrives, Daniel (Ruben Blades) greets him with an assault rifle. He doesn’t immediately shoot but Daniel makes it known that he won’t hesitate to if his old friend makes a wrong move. Victor tries to reassure his longtime frenemy that he just wants to help his new comrades but Daniel has a hard time believing Victor isn’t out to help himself.
Ever since Victor and Daniel collided at the dam, they’ve been at odds with each other. Victor didn’t intend for their friendship to end on such bad terms but that’s exactly how it played out. Because of that, Daniel feels like he can’t trust anything that Victor says. And while he’s somewhat correct in that assumption, Victor appears to have turned over a new leaf during his time away.
Back at the plane’s crash site, Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), John (Garrett Dillahunt), June (Jenna Elfman), and Morgan (Lennie James) search for clues about Althea’s whereabouts. She was taken captive by a uniformed soldier in the Season 5 Premiere and her friends have no idea what happened.
Shortly after scavenging the crash site, the group splits up to canvas the area. Morgan walks to a nearby pasture where two walkers are standing under a bait trap. He begins to investigate when an unknown foe throws a lasso around his legs. Morgan is incapacitated and is nearly bitten by one of the walkers as a result. Fortunately, Grace (Karen David) arrives in time to save him.
The bad news is Grace pulls a gun on Morgan following her takedown of the walkers. She doesn’t do this to rob Morgan but rather to help him.

What Morgan doesn’t know is the nearby walkers are contaminated with radioactive fallout. Grace explains that a reactor in the mountain went out of commission and she’s cleaning up all the dead bodies contaminated by it. Morgan, however, unknowingly walks into the same territory.
Grace, against her better instincts, uses the last of her truck’s water to decontaminate Morgan. She forces him to strip down and wash every inch of his body to remove any radioactive particles. Morgan does so willingly but hesitates with Grace’s protocols when he learns that he can’t hold on to his stick.
Since the wood is porous, any radioactive particulate would be embedded in it permanently. This means Morgan has to say goodbye to the staff gifted to him by Eastman (John Carroll Lynch) on The Walking Dead. The departure is a difficult one, though Morgan seems to have an equally difficult time removing his wedding ring. He’s already said goodbye to his wife but her memory seems to linger on.
After a small break, the focus shifts to Daniel and Victor at the new camp. They attempt to get a hold of Alicia and the others over the radio but it takes them some time. Victor eventually contacts Luciana (Danay Garcia) back at the current truck-stop, renewing our hope. Daniel listens to their conversation and begins to believe Victor’s story after hearing it. And while he does allow Victor to live, Daniel has other plans in mind.
Rather than giving Victor the plane, Daniel flat out refuses to help. He admits to believing Victor’s story but he knows that nothing will go according to plan if Victor tries to help someone else.
Following this exchange, Daniel throws Victor back outside the walls to fend for himself. Victor isn’t armed with any sort of weapon but that doesn’t prevent him from taking down the walkers called to Daniel’s gate. Oh yeah, Daniel fires off a couple of shots to draw the dead to their fence while he’s releasing Victor from the camp, which tells us he still wants to see Victor dead.
In the radioactive zone, Grace accompanies Morgan and the others to a campsite where more contaminated bodies are located. John and June find a pile of burnt ashes with multiple markers lying in it — the markers being indicators of radiation poisoning. At the same time, they discover that the people who burned the bodies became infected with radiation poisoning — and it eventually led to their whole camp turning.
Once Grace is debriefed on the situation, she takes it upon herself to clean up the area. Even though John, June, and the others offer their help, Grace refuses their assistance. She understands their help would make the job much easier — she just doesn’t want to put anyone else’s life in danger.
Seeing as how Grace has already been contaminated by huge amounts of radiation, her life isn’t as important. The others, however, still have a chance at surviving the deadly wasteland. She points this fact out and continues with her task.
“The Hurt That Will Happen” closes out with Grace and her new friends parting ways. Although, considering how she’s set to be a series regular in Season Five, Grace is bound to return in the near future. Who knows, she might even be working with the mystery soldiers who captured Althea (Maggie Grace) in last week’s episode. Although, only time will tell if that’s true or not.
