“This is not yours to fix alone. You act like you’re all alone out there in the world, but you’re not. You’re not alone.” – Joyce

Episode: “Chapter Seven: The Bathtub”

This powerful line comes from Joyce when she is talking to her son Jonathan near the end of the first season. After Jonathan is arrested for accidentally assaulting a police officer, the mother and son reconnect.

Even though they are both at their respective wits ends, they still can come together enough to realize that they need to work together if they want to find Will.

While the focus is obviously on finding Will, this is also a moment where Joyce, the best mom in the world, reminds her eldest son that she still loves him and is still there for him. Even though at the time it might seem to Jonathan that he is against the whole world, he still has people in his corner who are there for him and can help him.

This quote also touches on the show’s themes of friendship, acceptance and togetherness. One of the central messages of the show is that in order to accomplish great things in life we need to work with our friends and accept their help.

Stranger Things is ultimately an optimistic show that, much like the 80s pop culture that inspired it, sees the value in human beings and the strength that people have when we all come together and work to solve a problem. In both Stranger Things and many 80s shows, movies and books, evil can only be defeated when people work together and this line is an example of that testament.
