“No, El, you’re not the Monster. You saved me, do you understand? You saved me.” – Mike

Episode: “Chapter Six: The Monster”

This scene was an incredibly important moment in the first season and acted as a turning point in Eleven’s relationship with the boys and how they came to view her as a real friend and not a weirdo.

This comes when Eleven breaks into tears after saving the boys from the bullies and admits that it is her fault that the Demogorgon is in Hawkins, and she calls herself “the monster” because of that. Being the good friend that he is, Mike immediately rebukes that claim and tells Eleven that no she isn’t a monster after all, she is a savior and if it wasn’t for her Mike would be dead.

That is a huge moment for Mike, he owes Eleven his life now and for Eleven it is the beginning of her as the hero. This is maybe not the role that she asked for but the one that she will come to accept and do everything in her power to save her friends. This is also one of the formative moments in the romantic relationship between Mike and Eleven and one that will continue to form as the show progresses.

For all of us, it is a reminder that even when we are feeling down, when we are feeling that things can’t get worse and everything is our fault, we still have our friends to be there for us and to back us up. Our friends lift us up when we are down and have our backs when we need them and there is almost no better group of friends on TV then the ones on Stranger Things.
