“Use the shampoo and conditioner and when your hair’s damp, not wet, okay? When it’s damp, you do four puffs of the Farrah Fawcett spray.” – Steve

Episode: “The Spy”

This is the moment Steve turned from bully/maybe a friend into full-on single mom Steve meme. Steve’s journey through the second season was going from a slightly antagonistic role to a caring, nurturing figure for the main group and especially for Dustin who Steve took under his wing and mentored.

Steve’s relationship with Dustin takes on a big-brother, little-brother vibe later in the second season, and this line is a hilarious reinforcement of that relationship. Steve, the ultimate cool guy, is trying to teach Dustin how to be better with the ladies and recommends some hair-care strategies and styling tips that are honestly really useful. I just wish I had some Farrah Fawcett hair spray to use.

The line is also indicative of the metaphorical leaf that Steve has turned over. He has become a much more caring, protective and heartwarming character since season one and it looks like that will continue into season three.

Finally, this line is also representative of the second kind of relationships that are a huge part of this show.

Obviously, a major theme is friendship, but sibling relationships are also super important to the show. Will had Jonathan, Mike has Nancy, Lucas has Erica and now Dustin has a big brother surrogate as well in the form of Steve. What makes their relationship great is that they are two characters that we never would have expected to work so well together but they do and the chemistry between the two actors is there as well.
