NBC’s The Enemy Within is less than a week away from its season finale. And the conclusion is bound to shock us all. Check out a preview of “Sierra Maestra” below.

Warning! Potential spoilers for the season finale of The Enemy Within follow. Read on at your own discretion.

If you’ve been following along to every episode of NBC’s The Enemy Within, then you know that the show has spent twelve episodes building towards a confrontation between Mikael Tal (Lev Gorn) and Agent Keaton (Morris Chestnut). They’ve become each other’s targets and one will presumably be dead before the finale draws to a close. The reason for that: Erica Shepherd (Jennifer Carpenter).

Former CIA Agent Erica Shepherd has redeemed herself by helping the FBI get closer to catching Tal but she’s been hiding secrets from Keaton. Her phone calls most of all have given us reason to doubt where her loyalties truly lie. This could all be part of Shepherd’s elaborate plot to regain some dignity—and freedom—but there’s a slight possibility that she is a traitor.

The preview for “Sierra Maestra” actually ends with Tal giving Shepherd a gun to prove her loyalty to him. She raises it and fires in Agent Keaton’s direction, possibly killing him. The clip cuts to black shortly after so we don’t know whether or not Shepherd actually shot Keaton at point-blank range. But if she has done the unthinkable, that would mean our worst fears have come true.

On the other hand, Agent Shepherd could be firing over Keaton’s shoulder to the guards standing nearby. We know she’s an expert marksman and the disgraced Agent does seem capable of killing a handful of guards in mere seconds. But even if Shepherd kills Tal’s troops, the man is standing right next to her and he could put a knife in her side before she can swing around and shoot him. It’s also worth mentioning that her goodbye to Hannah in “Sequestered” did seem to be foreshadowing her death.

The bad news is Shepherd might not be the only casualty inThe Enemy Within’s season finale. Images for the last episode show Agent Bragg (Noah Mills) being caught in a massive explosion—presumably one set up by Tal’s terrorist network. Bragg is being blown into the air which doesn’t bode well for his future. He may survive but only time will tell.

On top of Agent Bragg being caught in the explosion, the rest of Keaton’s team appears to be in just as much danger. Agent Pettigrew (Cassandra Freeman) is shown standing alongside a large team of FBI Agents in a separate image. They’ve stormed this same warehouse but come under attack as an explosive device is detonated. The images don’t reveal if the explosion was caused by an internal device or via a mortar round from outside, but either way, the fate of Agent Keaton’s soldiers is undetermined.

One thing about the finale is certain—Agent Keaton’s team will venture to Sierra Maestra in Cuba—the detention center for Tal’s operatives. This presents a major problem for the FBI considering Tal likely wants to free his comrades stationed there. He may or may not succeed but it’s clear that an attempt will be made. The question is: Could an even more dangerous terrorist be lurking within those walls?

All things considered, the season finale is bound to conclude with Tal being captured or killed. He’s eluded the FBI for long enough and it’s about time they catch him. But even if they do, the FBI’s job is far from done. They still have terrorist cells working within the United States—not to mention the intelligence officers who’ve become compromised.

In last week’s episode, Paul Bachus (Michael O’Keefe) was captured and exposed as one of Tal’s operatives. He fell into a trap set up by Agent Keaton after they suspected Bachus of feeding intel directly to Tal. The FBI now have him detained but he’s just one of many operatives who are still covertly working within the government. Let’s not forget about Anna Cruz (Coral Peña).

Considering how many sleeper agents could still be active, that might give Keaton a reason to keep Erica Shepherd around. She won’t have a purpose for working with the FBI anymore but the search for all of Tal’s operatives can change that. Otherwise, she’ll be sent back to a supermax prison cell.

There is, however, a very slim chance that Shepherd will be exonerated of her crimes. We don’t picture her getting off so easily but Tal’s complete confession could prove that he coerced Shepherd into betraying her country. In doing so, the high courts may be urged to dismiss the charges against her, but that’s a long shot if we’re being honest.
