20. The Last Summer

The Last Summer follows a group of friends as they try to figure out who they want to be and who they want to be with before they go off to college. The first potential couple is Phoebe and Griffin who are in a will-they-or-won’t-they relationship. It’s clear they like each other but aren’t willing to admit it just yet.

Then there is Mason and Erin. Erin tries to break up with Mason but ends up kissing him instead. But soon Erin meets a baseball player and starts seeing him, leaving Mason feeling confused and lost. The film goes on to show how the group struggles with relationships, friendships, love, and what they want to do with their lives.

The Last Summer starts KJ Apa, Maia Mitchell, Norman Johnson Jr., Jacob Latimore, Wolfgang Novogratz, Sosie Bacon, Mario Revolori, Jacob McCarthy, Halston Sage, and Tyler Posey.

Besides the relationships between the characters, the film also goes into the stress of picking a major. Do you pick something sustainable that will pay good money or do you choose something you’re passionate about? For Griffin, it’s a choice between a business major or going into art and music. He’s passionate about music, but knows it doesn’t pay.

The Last Summer just came out this May, so if you haven’t checked it out yet, now’s the time. While it’s pretty focused on love and drama, it has plenty of comedic moments as well. Erin meets her baseball player boyfriend when he literally falls into her lap during a game. It’s a bit cheesy, but most good rom-coms are.
