Grey’s Anatomy season 15, episode 23 recap: What I Did For Love

Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 crossover to give us yet another intense two-hour event.
Grey’s Anatomy has another crossover with Station 19 this week, focusing this time on the Fire Chief’s health. The episode glosses over Meredith’s happy-go-lucky attitude which Maggie excitedly points out as they head off to work. DeLuca and Meredith really are adorable. I wasn’t happy about anyone post-Derek, but I approve of DeLuca.
A lot is going on as this week’s episode begins including Owen taking notice of Link and Amelia’s new situation and Maggie avoiding answering Jackson’s question about moving in. She wants to talk to Meredith first, but really it’s just an excuse to delay giving an answer.
Grey’s Anatomy focuses on the woes of healthcare barriers this week when an immigrant father, Luis, brings in his daughter, Gabi, to the hospital. He is living in the U.S. on a visa and worked to bring his family over, who unfortunately was being kept at the border. While his daughter is now with him, his wife remains detained. Despite working, the father is unable to purchase insurance for himself or his daughter.
He’s concerned that he won’t be able to afford her treatment so they suggest he apply for state insurance which would be effective immediately once approved. Unfortunately, DeLuca learns that the father makes too much to qualify (seriously?). Matters worsen when they find a mass which means serious treatment is needed, like STAT.
Being a mother, Meredith steps in to tell Luis that everything is taken care of, and not to worry about the cost. What exactly does she plan to do? Use her daughter Ellis’ coverage for Gabi. The look on Richard’s face when he realizes what Meredith has done is frightening–he’s not happy at all. But Meredith is determined to help Gabi, even if it means Richard calls it in.
During the surgery, Meredith learns that the mass Gabi has is cancerous, which means that treatment could and probably will go on for years. This situation ticks off Richard even more because he’s being forced to partake in lies which are not part of his sobriety plan. But given that they’re in so deep as it is, Richard tells Meredith that she has to make it appear that Gabi is so ill that she will have to be in the hospital for at least 30 days. At that point, state insurance will go into effect.
All the while, DeLuca seems to be judging Meredith from afar, and we’re pretty sure he disapproves of whatever she’s been doing. But PSYCH, he’s actually impressed, in fact, he’s so impressed that it prompts to say–I love you. Unfortunately, Meredith doesn’t reciprocate the sentiment. Well, then.
Grey’s Anatomy crosses over with Station 19 when the Fire Chief is brought in by Levi. It turns out he was buying flowers when he suddenly passed out and Levi happened to be passing by. Ripley (the Fire Chief) was getting flowers for Vic, a woman that works at Station 19. It turns out no one but one person knew about Ripley and Vic so they’re all shocked to learn of the secret romance. Right before Ripley had this emergency, Vic had proposed and Ripley gave no response. Sound familiar, Maggie?

This entire situation makes Maggie realize she does want to move in with Jackson. Finally! But she tells him that he has to accept her for who she is–a person that weighs the pros and cons of everything. He randomly suggests that they pro and con over a camping trip. Okay, I didn’t expect that but it’s still cute nonetheless.
So what happens with Ripley? Well, his health is worse than Maggie thought but before she can get to him and tell him, she learns that he’s run away, presumably to go after Vic and tell her yes.
In other parts of Grey’s Anatomy, Koracick decides to stick around longer so he can be there for Teddy’s delivery and also surprises her with an apartment fitting the description she wanted. They are so cute too! Meanwhile, Owen tries to talk to Amelia about Link but also apologizes for how he was with her. After starting therapy, he’s realized he’s the problem and he’s working on it. Damn, never would have thought we would reach this day with Owen. So proud of him.
We see him in another therapy session during which he implies he wants more help because he wants to be completely ready when he tells her he loves her. Say what?! Who is he talking about? Teddy? Amelia? Someone else?
Remember sad, lost Jo? Well, she completely loses it in this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy when she finds out that she can’t help her patient with the rare blood. In fact, Teddy and Ben both notice something is going on with Jo and confront Bailey about it. Will she ever tell anyone what’s actually going on? It’s starting to look like she’s going to have to very, very soon.
