NBC’s The Enemy Within is slowly unraveling the mystery behind Mikael Tal. Though, the latest episode pulled on that thread a bit quicker than others have. Check out our recap for more on last night’s episode.

Even though the premise of NBC’s The Enemy Within was built upon Erica Shepherd (Jennifer Carpenter) being America’s most-hated traitor, it appears as if she’s on the right track to earning back her freedom. “Chigorin”, the latest episode proved so and then some.

Warning! Potential spoilers for the past ten episodes of The Enemy Within follow. Read on at your own discretion.

In the most recent episode, former CIA Agent Erica Shepherd earned additional freedoms from her FBI caretakers. After she successfully brought FBI Agent Keaton (Morris Chestnut) one step closer to finding Tal (Lev Gorn), Erica was granted time with her daughter. She and Keaton already came to an arrangement about allowing Hannah to visit but a session outside was unheard of.

Following their short rendezvous, Erica is called to assist Keaton in his search for the murderers of eight people who boarded a private flight. They’re in connection with Tal’s operation and it’s later revealed that the same killer sabotaged Laine’s flight. Everyone was thought to have died aboard the plane but the saboteur parachuted out. This revelation doesn’t sit well with Keaton and he becomes furious at the thought of a killer going free.

When Erica is sent back to her cell, she receives an unexpected visitor: her ex-husband. He doesn’t come with tidings of joy and he’s actually there to tell her that Hannah will no longer be visiting. Erica is devastated so she attempts to talk him out of it. Tom, however, doesn’t budge. He leaves shortly after with Erica sobbing in response to his declaration—if only he knew why Erica did what she did.

Meanwhile, Agent Keaton’s task-force heads out to recover Chigorin—the man responsible for taking down Agent Laine’s plane. They get close to Chigorin’s location but then the camera shifts back to Erica in her cell. She’s pulling out her secret cell phone to warn Tal that the FBI is about to apprehend Chigorin. Erica does so successfully and Chigorin gets away, for a split second.

Chigorin races out of his building only to be followed by Agent Keaton. He tackles the assassin to the ground and beats the living daylights out of him. Chigorin only survives because one of his lackeys came to rescue him.

At the FBI headquarters, Keaton receives a tip from Shepherd about the black box recovered from Laine’s crashed flight. The CIA reported that it was destroyed but the devices are built to withstand even the most intense events. Keaton takes Shepherd’s word for it and she’s right.

When Keaton goes over to the CIA, he briefly argues with Deputy Director Cabrera (James Carpinello) but the latter begrudgingly allows Keaton listen to the tapes—mostly because he threatens to launch a public investigation into Sierra Maestra—something Cabrera cannot allow to happen.

While listening to the recording, Keaton discovers that the killer shot all the passengers aboard the plane before it crashed—Laine never had a chance of surviving. The only sound Keaton can decipher from the black box are screams, some presumably belonging to Laine. All he can muster are tears after listening to such a heartbreaking record.
