Because there is so much new content being pumped into Netflix every month, every week, and every day, it’s fair that some series fall out of our consciousness. But the reassuring thing about streaming series is that they will always be available to watch whenever you’ve emptied your watch list (well, original series will always be available). This month, the second season of the Danish co-production The Rain premieres, and it’s one of May’s strongest new titles.

The series centers on Simone (Alba August) and Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen), two Danish siblings who retreat from their underground bunker after six years to discover civilization has been completely wiped out. A rainfall carried the virus that killed almost every human, but when the rain passes, Simone and Rasmus join forces with other young survivors and set out to find their scientist father who never returned to their bunker. It’s a wild journey through the dangerous wasteland in search of safety, answers, and a cure.

The Rain was the first Danish original series to debut on Netflix when it made its premiere last May. While the series didn’t pick up the same amount of steam like many other original breakout sensations, the eight-episode first season was a solid pre-summer binge-watch for fans of post-apocalyptic thrillers. Don’t forget to catch up on the first season if you haven’t already watched before the second season of eight episodes drops on May 17.
