Grey’s Anatomy season 15, episode 22 recap: Head Over High Heels
By Ariba Bhuvad
Grey’s Anatomy reminds us that with the good times come the devastatingly bad times too.
Oh, Grey’s Anatomy, why do you enjoy breaking our hearts? The JoLex storyline is really starting to worry me and I need Jo to tell Alex what’s going on STAT. Things are getting worse between the two of them and it’s only a matter of time before someone walks away. Sigh.
The episode opens to DeLuca getting caught by Zola as he attempts to sneak away. Talk about awkward! The old Meredith would have freaked out but this Meredith was calm and collect and merely complained that she didn’t get the chance to tell them properly. It’s quite hilarious actually because her kids know DeLuca as the mopey guy that slept on the couch.
Speaking of relationships, Nico and Levi aren’t exactly on the best terms right now. Nico is trying to apply for jobs and he has one in San Francisco. As you can imagine, Levi isn’t very excited about it and urges Nico to find something closer. This isn’t going to end well.
In JoLex land, Jo is pretty much a hot mess. She shows up to work drunk and is disinterested in talking to anyone or doing anything. Meanwhile, Alex is freaking out because “it’s happening again”. Poor guy, can he ever catch a beat?
Thanks to Koracick, we get some much-needed comedic relief in this episode of Grey’s Anatomy. He’s pretty happy with Teddy and is taking notice to Amelia’s newfound relationship with Link. What is it he called him? Ortho Barbie.
But Koracick has a great point during their conversation–Link is Amelia’s Altman. It’s unfathomable that someone relatively normal could like someone as damaged as Amelia or him. And he’s right. She’s so used to self-sabotaging or walking away from good things that it hasn’t settled in that Link is a good guy, and wants to be with her.
Owen finally goes to therapy, Grey’s Anatomy fans! And boy, was it heavy. But the therapist manages to identify the root of all Owen’s problems–a memory of the day his father died. It’s such a profound, eye-opening moment for him because he’s never known what’s the cause of all these insecurities and behavioral traits. It was one hell of a first session but hopefully, it’s placed him on the path to becoming whole.
No one has been able to get through to Jo, apart from her telling Link what happened in Pittsburgh. So Meredith recruits Jackson to get through to her, which is just another epic fail. All she has to say is that he was right but it doesn’t stop him from pushing on anyway. It doesn’t take much for Jackson to realize that Jo was drunk at work–and he’s not very happy about it. He tells her that if she shows up like this at work again, then it’s game over.

Things don’t get any better at home when Alex shows up livid after learning about Jo being drunk at work. I have a bad feeling about what their future looks like and if this episode was any indication, things are about to get worse before they ever get better.
Back again to the happier parts of the episode, Meredith and DeLuca are just so freaking adorable. She has three kids and guess what, he loves kids! In fact, he’s amazing with them! There is nothing for Mer to worry about and it made Grey’s Anatomy fans everywhere extremely happy. Luckily, Bailey was around to help Meredith figure out how to tell the kids about her dating life.
Of course, Bailey is dealing with issues of her own with Tuck who was dealing with his father’s anger over him calling Ben, “Dad”. Ouch, but I mean, Ben has been pretty darn amazing, so we can’t blame him. Good news though, Meredith’s kids take the news extremely well, and it seems like Meredith has finally found love again. Sigh.
In other parts of Grey’s Anatomy, Richard dealt with an old friend from AA while Maggie had to step into Nico’s surgery that went horribly wrong. The patient was the grandson of one of Bailey’s long-time patients so she was extremely angry to learn that Nico messed things up. And speaking of messing things up, after Nico’s horrible day, he gets into it with Levi. So, relationship over?
All I’m going to say is that out of everyone’s arcs in this episode of Grey’s Anatomy, I’m extremely proud of Amelia of looking ahead to a better future with Link. She’s not using him but choosing to take an easier path that may result in happiness. You go, girl!
