Grey’s Anatomy season 15, episode 21 recap: Good Shepherd
By Ariba Bhuvad
Amelia and Link shippers, this episode of Grey’s Anatomy will tease you.
Grey’s Anatomy is giving us some major hopes with the Link and Amelia storyline, and in “Good Shepherd” we get a little taste of what a relationship between them could look like. Away from Seattle, Link and Amelia are in New York City tasked with performing a very intense and complicated surgery. And what better way to take the edge off than some good ‘ol fashioned “no strings attached” sex?
While Link is willing to go the extra mile to be cute, Amelia has her walls up as always. Instead of bed in breakfast, they end up at a pizza place. Link remembers his time in NYC fondly while Amelia feels the complete opposite. It was a place of bad juju for her, and the quicker she can get out, the happier she’ll be.
The next morning as Amelia and Link head over to the center and bump into an unexpected person–Amelia’s sister, Nancy. Awkward. In the rush of freaking out, Amelia ends up introducing Link as her husband, you know her husband, Owen. Uh oh, this couldn’t get worse, could it?
As Amelia is on the verge of a panic attack, Link steps up his game to fully embrace being Owen. It’s actually quite the moment and certainly made a lot of people swoon as it unfolded. Despite begging Amelia and Link to come to dinner, Nancy is unsuccessful in getting Amelia to agree.
Moving onto the patient, Amelia and Link meet with Jonah and his brother, Brady. Jonah has scoliosis and is hoping Amelia and Link can help him in a way that allows him to pursue his dreams. The plan is to finish the surgery by 5 PM and then stick around for an additional 24 hours to make sure Jonah is alright.
Unfortunately for Amelia, Nancy gets wind of this and insists that she and Link come to dinner. Let’s just say Link isn’t too eager to play her pretend husband, but Amelia convinces him otherwise. She’ll make it worth his while, so she says.
Grey’s Anatomy briefly reminds us how much we miss Derek Shepherd especially with his sisters all around us. We say sisters because it’s not just Amelia and Nancy, there’s also Kathleen! Uh oh. Amelia was under the impression it’d just be Nancy but it looks like the whole family is getting together, including their mother.
The “let’s get to know our sister’s husband” interrogation kicks off almost immediately as Link is bombarded with questions about the Army and Iraq. He’s able to BS for a while but hits a dead-end and makes a run for the bathroom.
It doesn’t really get easier as her sisters badger Link about Amelia, so eventually, Amelia has to make up a lie about leaving. How long can she subject Link to her crazy family? Well, Link asks her to trust him and they end up sticking around for dinner.
Things feel like they just might be alright for a moment, but that sort of thing never lasts in Grey’s Anatomy does it? Mid-dinner, Amelia’s mother shows up and when Link is introduced as Owen to her, she is quick to say he’s not. How does she know? She met him some time ago.

Before we know it, it turns into a Shepherd family feud as Amelia is yelled at for lying. It only gets worse when they find out she had a brain tumor. Oh, and then when they learn about Leo and Betty. But at least Link did his best to stand up for her, which was adorable by the way.
After storming out of the house, Amelia doesn’t have the greatest attitude towards Link but it’s interrupted when they learn Jonah is in trouble. It turns out the rods they put in during surgery didn’t work, and he will have to revert back to the old ones unless Amelia pulls off a very risky surgery that could potentially help him forever.
Link is frustrated, Jonah’s brother is livid, but since Jonah is 18, he doesn’t need anyone’s permission. And Amelia is the best of the best so even though she’s trying to prove something, she is the one to get the job done–and she does! Mission successful.
Link’s not in the mood to be around Amelia, however, so he ends up leaving while Amelia runs into her mom. They get into a deep conversation about Amelia’s life growing up and how her mother let Derek take care of her. Looking back, her mother is torn that she didn’t show up for her daughter (she really could have used some motherly support!).
And just like that, Grey’s Anatomy gives Amelia the motherly kick in the butt she needed to focus on the good in her life, you know like Link. Grabbing a box of the best donuts ever and heading to the jet, Amelia apologizes to Link and it feels like things between them are going to be okay. We sure hope so, because they’re absolutely adorable!
