Now that we know Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason intend to take Castle Rock in a different direction for season two, that raises the question of where this new cast will go.

Surprisingly, Hulu isn’t continuing the story that began in the first season of Castle Rock. Recent casting announcements from Entertainment Weekly confirmed a new cast and story would be written in to replace season one’s All-Stars. Among those appearing in Season Two are Tim Robbins, Lizzy Caplan, and Garrett Hedlund.

As far as the plot goes, the sophomore season of Castle Rock will explore two of King’s stories: Misery and The Sun Dog. It’ll reportedly center around Reginald “Pop” Merrill (Tim Robbins) and the dilemma he faces now that his cancer has left him with no choice but to transfer the family business over to a worthy successor.

Ace (Garrett Hedlund) is first in line to assume control but his brother Chris (Matthew Alan) may have to step up if negotiations with their rival gang fall apart. Chris is reportedly responsible for maintaining the piece but we all know how tense relationships between crime families turn out.

What’s of more interest in season two is how Annie Wilkes (Lizzie Kaplan) will factor into the plot. The only details revealed in the initial report just say she become trapped in the town of Castle Rock. An explanation isn’t readily available but it may have something to do with Joy Wilkes (Elsie Fisher).

Annie’s daughter will reportedly play some role in the coming plot. How she does so is anyone’s guess but Joy’s absence from the Misery film may suggest that she died before the movie’s events took place. Who knows, maybe Joy’s death is what drove Annie to develop a psychotic alter-ego.

Details on Annie indicate she’ll be dealing with mental issues from the start so a complete breakdown would require an even more tragic event take place—Joy’s death would essentially be the perfect trigger. Annie’s exploits in Misery did seem to hint at her hiding an even darker past—perhaps, she was hiding Joy’s murder all along.
