John Leonetti director of Annabelle and Wish Upon will be releasing the upcoming horror movie The Silence for Netflix on April 10.

It looks like Netflix has found its next Bird Box. Netflix announced that horror movie The Silence will be released on the streaming service on April 10.

The film will star Netflix regulars Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto (both Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as well as Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games series). According to IGN, Shipka will play a deaf teenager named Ally who, along with her family, will try to survive against a lethal species of bats named Vesps as well as the human dangers that come with any post-apocalyptic scenarios.

The film looks like a combination of Bird Box and A Quiet Place with appropriately apocalyptic stakes and killer monsters, specifically giant killer bats.

Check out the trailer below.

Indeed the movie does look like Netflix is trying to capitalize on the success of Bird Box with some top-tier talent attached to what, in any other case, would be a standard schlock monster movie. As well the movie is also based on a best-selling fantasy/horror novel of the same name by Tim Lebbon, just like Bird Box!

Here is the synopsis for the film, via Netflix:

"“When the world is under attack from terrifying creatures who hunt their human prey by sound, 16-year old Ally Andrews (Shipka), who lost her hearing at 13, and her family seeks refuge in a remote haven. But they discover a sinister cult who are eager to exploit Ally’s heightened senses.”"

Given that the trailer for the movie focuses so much on the family aspects of the movie as well as the large-scale epidemic the characters find themselves in (cities burning, regions being wiped off the map, etc.) you’d be forgiven if you confused this film with Bird Box. What sets The Silence apart seemingly is that it will focus on not being able to make sound as opposed to not being able to see, a concept that last years A Quiet Place was built around.

While the premise of the movie might seem silly from the outside the trailer takes the idea deadly seriously and it looks like the film will feature lots of drama alongside the scares and suspense. While Netflix promises that the movie will make us scream, we will keep our fingers crossed that the film reaches the success of Bird Box (without all the drama) and is still satisfactorily scary.
