A little about the character: Uhtred, son of Uhtred, is a Saxon-born, Danish-raised man. His loyalties are divided, as he wants to be respected by the Danes but also wants his ancestral home back from the uncle who stole it and sold him into slavery.
After the death of Ragnar, the Dane who took him as a slave but raised him as one of his own, he goes on a journey to get his land back. However, that isn’t going to be as simple as he’d hoped.
Why the character is a fan-favorite: Uhtred is one of those characters you’re not always going to like. And that is partially the reason he’s a fan-favorite. He’s flawed, human, but likable at the same time.
Throughout The Last Kingdom, he’s had everything stacked against him. Both Saxon and Dane, he’s been unable to find a place in a warring kingdom. He’s tried to do right by Alfred for his own gains, but that’s often led to him being imprisoned, sold back into slavery, and almost executed or killed in battle.
Uhtred is still loyal to his friends, though. He tries to stay one step ahead of his enemies, willing to train the Saxons to fight like the Danes in an attempt to protect the kingdom and his ancestral home. When it looks like he’s turning against the people who care for him, you can usually tell he has something up his sleeve.
And it’s that forward thinking and loyalty that makes him loved by so many. Who isn’t rooting for him to get Bebbenburg back?
