2. Poussey Washington — Orange Is the New Black

When the character first appeared: Samira Wiley’s Poussey was introduced in the second episode of Orange Is the New Black season 1.

A little about the character: Poussey is one of the most intelligent and outspoken women at Litchfield. However, she’s also one of the most caring, never afraid to stand by her morals and convictions. While she loves to joke around with friends, she will knock anyone down who confronts her or those she cares about.

Why the character is a fan-favorite: Out of all the characters on Orange Is the New Black, Poussey was the one to always stand by her own morals. She didn’t waver, even when she went through bouts of depression and, later, alcoholism.

Grounded and straight forward, there were multiple layers to the character that we got to see over the course of five seasons. Fans had the chance to feel some sort of connection to her and want to see her win every step of the way.

Orange Is the New Black has never been afraid of bringing diverse characters into the series from the beginning, and Poussey was a positive iteration. We got the chance to see her backstory — the initial shame and then the acceptance from her family. All this helped build her into the woman she was during her time at Litchfield.

She very quickly proved herself worthy of support and love. As a loyal, kind-hearted woman, this was someone we’d want on our side and it’s no surprise she’s one of the top best Netflix Original characters ever.
