8. Leonard Peabody — The Umbrella Academy
Played by: John Magaro
When the character first appeared: While being credited for the first episode, Leonard didn’t appear until the second.
Why fans don’t like the character: Leonard suffered from one of the most serious cases of being a tropish character. He worked his way into Vanya’s life and manipulated her into using her powers to bring about the end of the world. It wasn’t hard to guess where his character was going and it was like there wasn’t any care about developing that character.
The manipulation was something that angered The Umbrella Academy fans the most. He came into the series initially as someone kind and supportive of Vanya, only to turn out to be someone manipulating her for his own gains. Not only is it a trope, but something women have had to deal with for centuries. It’s a standard storyline and the character had little imagination.
One of the downsides to Leonard is that he made some others unlikable, especially Vanya. He fueled Vanya’s anger and pulled her away from her family, making it more infuriating when the storyline played out just as everyone expected. Despite everything she’d been through and learned, Vanya hadn’t even realized she was being manipulated by this man.
Other than the manipulation, there was no need for Leonard. He offered nothing else for other characters, unlike even the two time agents, who did show a connection to some other characters throughout the season.
