12. Sir Reginald Hargreeves — The Umbrella Academy

When the character first appeared: The very first episode of The Umbrella Academy.

Why fans don’t like the character: The Umbrella Academy certainly did well giving each of the siblings their own personality and style. However, one thing that brought them all together was their mutual dislike of their father. Well, some tried to like him, but they all had unresolved anger and feelings.

It was soon clear why they hated him and that made fans hate him too. Sir Reginald Hargreeves wasn’t a kind father. He brought the children together for his own sick gain, making them into heroes and not allowing them to have their own childhood.

Throughout the flashbacks, we saw the father from the siblings’ POVs. This actually limited our own view of him, only seeing him as the cold and distant father. However, it does feel like there is more to him and this is something that a second season would need to explore.

This is a man who built a robot to be the perfect nanny (and later mother) to the children. He tried to protect in ways that are questionable. And it’s clear that he was proud of their actions now and then.

Yet, the lack of focus on him and the clear strictness and lack of feeling from him certainly led to fans hating him. Nobody likes a parent who is selfish or raising children differently to the social norms, creating emotional issues for the children. It may be difficult for some to get out of that mindset as we start to delve into the character more in the potential future.
