14. Kristin Ortega — Altered Carbon

When the character first appeared: Ortega was introduced in the very first episode.

Why fans don’t like the character: For some, Ortega was the whole problem with the series. As the lead female, she needed to be likable and draw people in, yet she ended up being the opposite. While as a police officer, she needed to be standoffish at times, there needed to be a vulnerability to her. We got some backstory but it was easy to guess and somewhat annoying to watch.

Ortega was one person against the world. She tried to make things right and show the corruption within the world, but it was never going to be possible when she couldn’t trust people.

But that’s not the part that made so many people absolutely hate her. Ortega’s downfall was her stereotypical character development. As a Latina woman, she was bilingual and it offered a PoC in the lead role, yet she didn’t offer a positive view.

She was very much the loud Latina woman that is constantly shown on TV and in movies. Like so many other bilingual characters on shows, including the likes of Grey’s Anatomy and Vida, she chooses to swear and shout obscenities in her native language. While some words may slip out, many fans have pointed out that it wouldn’t happen as much as it does.

Altered Carbon season 2 will see mostly a new set of characters and Kristen Ortega won’t be part of it. That will either mean more reasons to like it or will open the door for another annoying character on the series.
