3. Willis “Diamondback” Stryker — Luke Cage

Played by: Erik LaRay Harvey

When the character first appeared: Diamondback was first introduced in episode 7 of Luke Cage season 1.

Why fans don’t like the character: Diamondback didn’t stand much of a chance. It wasn’t that he was a terrible character, but that he was a terribly written character. Even villains can be loved if they’ve been written well (just look at Jessica Jones‘ Kilgrave!)

Part of the issue for fans with Diamondback was that he came off the back of Cottonmouth’s end. Cottonmouth was a well developed character with a backstory given just as he was being written out. In a way, fans felt cheated out of this awesome villain, only to be replaced with one that felt a little more generic. Had Willis Stryker come first, there’s a chance he wouldn’t have been as universally hated as he was.

Another issue is that he was cheesy. Quoting Bible verses just before killing people is not a way to be liked. It’s cliche and tiresome.

Fortunately, the corniness of Diamondback doesn’t make the show too hard to watch. It makes his scenes just tiresome and bland compared to everything else within Luke Cage. He isn’t to blame for the cancellation of the series (which clearly has some sort of backstory between Netflix and Disney going on even if nobody wants to admit it).

If you do want a stereotypical costumed Marvel villain, maybe you’ll like Diamondback. However, for the world of Luke Cage and after the heavy, focused Cottonmouth, Willis Stryker just isn’t someone fans of the series can like.
