15 most hated Netflix Original characters ever
5. Zelda Spellman — Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Played by: Miranda Otto
When the character first appeared: During the very first episode of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Why fans don’t like the character: I’ll be the first to admit I was surprised how much I despised Zelda from her first appearance. While the strictest of the two aunts, she’s also extremely devout to her religion and that often rubs the wrong way. It’s not surprising to hear that some fans just couldn’t warm to her at all.
Zelda wants Sabrina to solely go on a path of being a witch. With her devout views, that’s not all that surprising, but it’s at the detriment of her niece. By not supporting Sabrina’s choice, she ends up blaming Sabrina for a lot of things that happen afterward. More often than not, she just seems annoyed that she has to cover up for her 16-year-old niece’s mistakes instead of helping her learn from them — because at 16, didn’t we all make mistakes?
Another annoyance is her lack of willingness to help the town. More often than not, she claims that the life of mortals isn’t something for witches to get involved in, despite many of the issues being linked to witches, the devil, and other supernatural causes. If things don’t affect her personally, she’s not interested in helping and it’s not surprising that Sabrina (and sometimes Hilda and Ambrose) choose to work behind her back.
On top of that, she’s not even loyal to her sister. When Hilda annoys her, Zelda chooses to kill Hilda and wait for her to rise from the dead. Despite knowing that Hilda won’t come back from the dead at some point, she shows no regret or sadness, trying to force her sister to be more like her instead of accepting her as someone else.
Without the warmth and maternal elements, it’s harder to accept her as Sabrina’s aunt. It doesn’t help that many people tuning into the series would have been used to Aunt Zelda from Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
