6. Charlotte Byrde — Ozark

When the character first appeared: Charlotte is introduced to us in the first episode of Ozark.

Why fans don’t like the character: Narrowling missing out on the top 5 most hated Netflix Original characters is Charlotte Byrde from Ozark. Most of the problems with her stem to the writing more than the actual character, but she can still make some of the episodes hard to watch.

As a young adult, it’s naturally that a character still needs to learn and develop. The problem for Charlotte is that she doesn’t. The mistakes she makes throughout are ridiculous and stem from her lack of awareness of the situation. And that’s ironic considering she’s actually an intelligent young woman.

Charlotte is a necessary character. She helps to ground out the family with her intelligence, especially with Jonah’s slightly more quirky personality. However, her “woe is me” personality is a little too much each episode. Dial it all back and she probably wouldn’t be as hated as she is.

What also doesn’t help is the amount of teen angst that comes off her. Sure, a teen in her situation is going to have an attitude problem but she never takes her foot off the gas. It’s leading to her making selfish decisions rather than thinking of the bigger picture.

And I’m fed up of angsty teens! It’s why I’ve stopped watching the majority of teen dramas! Maybe it’s been a while since I’ve been a teen and forgotten what it’s like, but teen angst is an overused tropey personality.
