Netflix’s The Order combines elements of all supernatural and sci-fi series and asks — what if a supernatural series occurred with actual college students?

Whether it was MTV’s Teen Wolf, HBO’s True Blood, the CW’s The Vampire Diaries or even Syfy’s The Magicians, there is something about supernatural, character-focused series that have captivated audiences since (and even before) Twilight.

Netflix’s new series, The Order, combines elements of all of these series and more for a unique foray into the supernatural genre and posits the question — what if a supernatural series occurred with actual college students?

From nervous and shoddily done fraternity hazing rituals, to awkward encounters with crushes, to random new friends made within moments of meeting each other, to professors that really don’t care why you missed class and to even creepy, random roommates who make you instantly regret not going to school with a friend, The Order pokes fun at these somewhat universal college experiences.

Sure, this is all put up against an almost comically exaggerated background — rarely do you find bars that allow underrated drinking at such an outrageous rate or people who play beer pong to make all decisions — but there is something about The Order that seems like it was written by people who had a normal college experience and thought to add an exaggerated version of this in an attempt to normalize the overarching supernatural theme.

Speaking of supernatural themes, several of the actors come from a background laced with supernatural and sci-fi experience. From Being Human to True Blood to even, yes, Supernatural, the actors and actresses in this series are no strangers to the genre and it shows in relatively solid acting for this type of series.

I mean, a series like this really makes you wonder what Netflix could have done with other sci-fi and supernatural shows that struggled with bad production and acting. I’ll never forgive Freeform for those cheesy swords early on in Shadowhunters.

That being said, it cannot be forgotten that this is a supernatural series. There is magic, there are werewolves and there is, obviously, a secret Order.

If supernatural series are not your thing, then this series is not for you. This is not a gateway series that is going to make you fall in love with the genre as a whole, and it is not a one-off series that will make you put aside your reservations when it comes to the genre.

However, if you are a fan of any supernatural or sci-fi series, then Netflix’s The Order should 100 percent be on your must-watch list.

Take it from someone who just binge-watched the entire season in a day.
