Netflix binges: The Umbrella Academy season 1 recap
The Umbrella Academy season 1, episode 7: “The Day That Was”
The Umbrella Academy not only had an impact on the kids who were actually in it but on the public, too. We see how a kid who is a big fan and who was born on the same day as the other kids travels just to try to join them. He fails, but his obsession remains. His life at home sucks, to say the least, and he went to jail for 12 years after killing his abusive father.
We see the day that “Leonard” gets out of jail for the said crime. He finds the book that Klaus threw out. Thanks to Five turning back time in the previous episode, Vanya no longer knows that Leonard has the book, but he knows that everyone else will be looking for Harold Jenkins, which is his real name.
Five, Diego and Allison head to the police station in order to get some information on Harold. Diego gets the file while Allison calls Vanya to try to get her to call her back. They quickly put together that Leonard is Harold. Meanwhile, Luther starts drinking after finding out that his father never read his correspondence from the moon. This leads to a little heart to heart between him and Klaus, which doesn’t end up being super effective.
Cha-Cha and Hazel still both get orders to terminate each other. Previously, we saw things from Cha-Cha’s perspective and now we’re getting the moment from Hazel’s perspective. Hazel even wants to run away with Agnes and they make plans to do so. Later, he gets the jump on Cha-Cha and knocks her out.
Five, Diego and Allison sneak around Harold’s place while he takes Vanya to a cabin. They find his little shrine of the Umbrella Academy members. Five passes out from a piece of shrapnel and Allison and Diego get him back home to patch him up.
Klaus finds Luther shirtless at a rave but is still struggling with his PTSD from his year of time travel. For him, the rave is like a war zone. While Klaus deals with that, Diego has to deal with being arrested for Detective Patch’s murder.
Vanya is starting to notice how invested Leonard is in her powers. He keeps pushing her to move a boat in the lake and she just feels ridiculous. Klaus probably feels equally as ridiculous when he’s trying to keep Luther from being attacked. He ends up hitting his head and we’re transported into a black and white place where the only color is on his tank top.
Klaus finally makes a connection with his father and he ends up calling Klaus his biggest disappointment. He claims that he was trying to prepare them all for something that was bigger than themselves. He also admits to killing himself in order to bring them all back together again.
A few guys pick a fight with Leonard when they won’t get off of his car so he and Vanya can leave. Her powers come out and it looks like she kills at least one of the guys with them. She calls for help and we later see her waiting at the hospital to see him.
Hazel doesn’t kill Cha-Cha but cuffs her to the radiator heater until she wakes up. She won’t let Hazel just go his own way because the world is ending in three days and she’d rather try to actually do something. He leaves and knows that she’ll come after him no matter what. She even threatens to kill Agnes.
All of the siblings are on their own at the end of the episode, which wasn’t part of the plan. It’s the exact opposite of what Five was hoping for. At this very moment, their chances of saving the world don’t seem good at all. The only positive is that Vanya might be a little too preoccupied at the hospital to continue working on her powers, which she appears to have no control over right now. With three episodes left, there’s still a lot of ground to cover with these characters.
