Netflix binges: The Umbrella Academy season 1 recap
The Umbrella Academy season 1, episode 6: “The Day That Wasn’t”
The moment that Klaus was thrown into 1968 is where “The Day That Wasn’t” begins. We’re pulled back to the present where Klaus is dumping his drugs in the toilet and Luther brings the family (minus Five and Vanya) together to tell him what Five told him.
Cha-Cha and Hazel are told that they aren’t to kill Number Five anymore. Hazel is over the whole hitman thing and based on the next mission Cha-Cha is assigned, HQ knows it. Five is taken to his new job and shown around by The Handler. I’m still suspicious of her because she claims that certain things are meant to happen, so why would she really save Five’s family?
Vanya heads to the house to invite the rest of the family to her concert but doesn’t end up doing so. Leonard pushed her to do it, just so he could take something from the house. Vanya’s anger is coming out as she and Leonard walk back to his place and it triggers her powers, but she doesn’t believe it.
At his new job, Five is quick to get a hang of his role, but clearly has some doubts about what The Handler is up to. He takes a file that he doesn’t want her to see him with as they have an awkward encounter in the bathroom.
Cha-Cha has trouble carrying out the hit on Hazel. She leads him to the woods, pulls a gun on him, but never pulls the trigger. She’s spent so much time with him and she’s starting to lean towards the same train of thought that Hazel’s had for a while now: why listen to them?
The Umbrella Academy eased up on the romantic tension between Allison and Luther a little in the last couple of episodes, but it returns in full force as we get a flashback to the moment when Luther gave Allison the A+L necklace. We even get a nice brotherly moment between Diego and Klaus.
The Handler tries to impress Five with her collection of trinkets that she’s acquired through her travels. At the end of their lunch together, she’s handed a file, presumably the one that Five was hiding earlier. Five disobeys and The Handler tries to take him out for it.
Now that Grace is back up and operational, Diego has one less thing to feel bad about. Instead, he’s confused as to who fixed her up. On the other end of the spectrum, Allison is getting ready to leave when Luther asks her to dance. This gives the show a chance to set the apocalypse aside for a sequence where Luther is back to his old self, just long enough to enjoy the moment.
Towards the end of the episode, a rapid chain of events unfold. Grace admits to Diego that she and Pogo have been lying to all of them. Five blows up The Handler. Vanya finds her father’s notebook under Leonard’s bed. Then, everything rewinds to Wednesday at 8:15 AM when Allison, Klaus, Luther and Diego were meeting about the apocalypse. Five’s lead is Harold Jenkins and the family will have to kill him.
It feels like things are heating up even more now as the deadline to save the world closes in on the Umbrella Academy. However, Five turning back time means that Vanya is still under the impression that Leonard is a good guy and her powers go back to being hidden. That might not play out too well in the end.
