Netflix binges: The Umbrella Academy season 1 recap
The Umbrella Academy season 1, episode 5: “Number 5”
“Number Five” is the appropriately titled fifth episode of the season. It begins with a montage of Five aging in the future and dragging Dolores along on his journey. Back in the present day, he tells Luther about the apocalypse and how he saw all of their dead bodies.
Diego blames Five for Detective Patch’s death and he tells the two brothers that his former employer is known as The Handler. In a flash-forward, we see Five accept the five-year contract he’s been offered. Luther judges him for being a hitman, but Five’s concern is stopping the end of the world.
The episode picks up with the other characters by showing Klaus in 1968. He makes his way back to the present day and Five instantly knows that he’s time traveled. He’s upset when Klaus says he destroyed the case as he knows that Cha-Cha and Hazel plan to come looking for it. Klaus was only gone for about a year, but he’s suffering from his time spent in the war.
Allison tries to warn Vanya about Leonard again to no avail. However, we did see that he stole her meds and got rid of them. It’s suspicious and even more so when Vanya mentions that the first chair stopped showing up. Allison looks into Leonard and finds an address for him.
Hazel continues to have a fondness for Agnes, the waitress at the donut shop. He’s not as dead-set on completing the job as Cha-Cha seems to be and that just might allow Number Five to succeed. Diego stakes out the place with Klaus in tow while Five makes a list of people whose deaths might stop the apocalypse from happening.
Diego and Klaus follow Hazel back to the motel and Diego ends up being shot at right when she gets up to the room. It’s safe to say that they didn’t make a whole lot of headway with that plan. They can’t even leave in the car because the tires were slashed.
Things turn back to Vanya as we see her solo audition, which in the comics leads to her becoming the villain of the first story arc. We see her win over her audience as she continues to play. Meanwhile, Allison sneaks around Leonard’s house and gets out right after he comes home.
Luther and Five meet up with Cha-Cha and Hazel. Five negotiates himself a phone call with the boss, but Klaus and Diego show up in an ice cream truck to run down Cha-Cha and Hazel. Time freezes, but Five is able to move around because The Handler shows up. She offers Five a new position and he continues negotiating in order to keep his family alive.
Vanya’s power comes out again when she’s with Leonard after getting the first chair spot. It travels back to the house and the camera pans up to show Pogo finishing up his work on Grace. He and Grace have some sort of secret that the children can never know.
A lot of suspicious things are going on as we hit the midway mark in the season and it’ll be interesting to see how they unravel during the remaining five episodes. Up until this point, Five hasn’t been very forthcoming and now that he’s disappeared again, we’ll have to wait and see if the family is actually safe or not.
