Fox’s The Gifted: Is there any chance Blink survived the shooting?

Fox’s The Gifted Season Two shocked fans by killing Blink, a central character on the show. But it seems we may not have seen the last of the teleporting mutant. We look at how Blink could still be alive and return to the show.

Clarice Fong aka Blink (Jamie Chung) has been a central character on Fox’s The Gifted since the show’s very first episode. So, it was a shock to viewers when Clarice was gunned down by Purifiers while trying to evacuate the Morlocks from their tunnels in episode fourteen, “calaMity”.

However, in episode fifteen of season two of The Gifted, the show hinted that Blink might still be alive. Following her apparent death, John Proudstar (Blair Redford) insists he can still feel Clarice. John’s mutant powers include tracking and his close connection to Clarice could mean that he can still track her presence, even if she isn’t on the same plane of reality.

Later in the episode, while John is alone, he hears Clarice calling his name. When he turns around, there is no one there. Did he just imagine her voice or was it something more? So, that begs to question: how could Clarice still be alive?

At the start of “Monsters”, Clarice tells John about her desire to disappear between the planes of existence, a hint that the portals she creates don’t simply teleport people and objects from one point to another, but through another reality that exists between. There is evidence of this in the X-Men comics, on which The Gifted is based.

In the X-Men comics, Blink was killed fairly soon after her first appearance. Sometime later, Blink is rescued by Selene the Black Queen and then recruited for a fight against Emma Frost, the White Queen.

When an explanation is given—according to Selene—Blink did not die. Instead, she was trapped within a realm housed in her portals. This could likely be the explanation as to how Clarice is calling out to John—that is if she did fall into her portal. Unfortunately, in the comic books, it seems this other realm keeps visitors in a near-death state, and in extreme agony. If Clarice is indeed alive inside her portal, she is not in a good place.

It is unlikely that Clarice will return as soon as The Gifted’s second season finale, but we could hope for her return in season three. Of course, what state Clarice will be in is anyone’s guess. Life inside her portal will be anything but a walk in the park. Though fans can be hopeful for her return, Clarice will definitely have a long, and hard, road to recovery once she rejoins regular reality in The Gifted season three.
