Abducted in Plain Sight is a new documentary on Netflix shocking viewers with its crazy true story.

Abducted in Plain Sight is a 2017 documentary currently making waves on Netflix. Directed by documentarian Sky Borgman, this film tells the shocking and true story of the Broberg Family, and the horrors they suffered at the hands of their sociopathic neighbor Robert Berchtold. It’s a story that has people talking and it needs to be seen to be believed.

At first glance the film seems to be just another run-of-the-mill crime documentary, telling the story of a sociopath who kidnaps and tries to marry a young girl. Abducted in Plain Sight, however, starts to become unique in the details it provides. Young Jan Broberg was not just kidnapped once, but multiple times, and she even fell in love with her abductor.

The film presents the events that happened, crazy as they are, but also examines how these normal people could have done such unexplainable things. Why would the parents sign an affidavit for the man who kidnapped their daughter only to let it happen again? Why would the young Jan want to run away with this man after he sexually abused her so many times? This film dives into the manipulation of everyone involved and how it still haunts them today.

We hear from an adult Jan Broberg and many other members of the family right away in the film, so we know that they survived the ordeal. We hear from the mouths of everyone how Robert Berchtold was able to brainwash them into doing things that they would not usually do. It is terrifying but also serves as a warning for anyone else in a similar situation.

The content in the film is shocking. Brainwashing, audio tapes of an insane man rambling and even Aliens, this film presents the absolutely insane facts in a way that could not have been understood in the same way during the 1970s when the abductions took place.

This film is sad, shocking and raw, and it does not play out the way you think it will. It kept me guessing and left me thinking about it long after the credits ran, and I won’t be forgetting it anytime soon.
