The Punisher season 2, episode 13: “The Whirlwind”

The final episode of season 2 of The Punisher did not leave many loose threads. Almost everything was wrapped up by the end of the episode. The finale started out with a fight (as usual). Madani just pushed Dr. Dumont out a window and Billy saw it, so now he is coming after her.

She grabs a gun only a minute before he comes barging in and they attack each other. She shoots him three times but that doesn’t stop him from strangling her until she’s unconscious. Is she alive? You have to stick around for the whole episode to find out.

Frank vs. Pilgrim

Frank contacts the Schultz’s to let them know he has their son and if they ever want to see him again, they need to tell Pilgrim to hand over Amy. But as usual, things don’t go as planned. Pilgrim doesn’t have Amy; she is still waiting in the hallway outside his room.

Too scared to do anything, she calls Curtis and Frank to tell them where she is. Frank shows up and that is where the first major showdown begins. Frank and Pilgrim fight each other in adjoining hotel rooms, shooting through the walls.

At one point, Pilgrim has shot the wall so many times that Frank is able to burst through it, tackling Pilgrim to the ground. But that’s not the end. Amy tries to help with the fight but ultimately ends up being taken at gunpoint by Pilgrim, leaving Frank no other choice but to negotiate to get her back.

The final fight between Frank and John Pilgrim happens outside the trailer. Frank is bluffing by saying he still has David Schultz (Curtis turned him over to the police) so that he can get Amy back. But what ends up working is playing to Pilgrim’s emotions. Amy is just a kid. Does he really want to kill another kid? Apparently not, because he lets her go.

Once Amy is out of the way, the two men fight to the death. They use whatever they can find in the junkyard to bash each other over the head. Pilgrim finally reveals that he can’t let Frank go because the Schultz’s have his boys. The fight ends when Pilgrim throws in the towel, telling Frank that when he goes to kill the Schultz’s, to leave his boys alone. It’s as much of a truce as these two are going to get.

Frank vs. The Schultz’s

The only people left for Frank to go after are the couple that started it all to begin with: The Schultz’s. They are talking about their son and what they should do with John Pilgrim when Amy walks in with a gun. She wants to know how it feels to have a gun pointed at them after they killed all of her friends.

Eliza Schultz goes for a knife but is quickly shot in the head by Frank. Making his presence known in the most Frank-like way possible. Anderson Schultz promptly freaks out but Frank gives him a choice. He can either shoot himself in the head or he can live with the truth of everything he did.  As Amy and Frank leave, you can see the flash of a gunshot go off in the background.

The End of Billy Russo

After being shot three times by Madani, Billy tries to get himself patched up by a shady doctor who mainly helps criminals for large sums of money. Billy brings him the money and tells him to dig the three bullets out of him and stitch him up. But after bullet number two, Billy passes out from the pain and the doctor takes the money and throws Billy into a dumpster.

Somehow, Billy wakes up, rolls out of the trash, and makes his way to Curtis’s apartment building. He calls Curtis and asks him to come down so he doesn’t have to die alone. But Curtis never shows up. Frank does. He lets Billy talk for a few minutes and then shoots him dead. Billy Russo had a great run as a villain but his time had come.

Frank and Amy

The closest thing Frank is ever going to have to a daughter now that his whole family is dead is Amy, but the time has come to let her go live her life. With the Schultz’s dead and John Pilgrim no longer a problem, she can do whatever she wants.

While Frank and her wait at the bus station, he tells her he doesn’t want her working any more blackmail jobs. He just wants her to be a kid and to leave the past in the past. He also gives her the number of a guy he knows in Florida who runs a dive school to help her get closer to her dream job. They then hug before she gets on the bus and they finally part ways.

The End

After her fight with Billy, Madani does wake up and once Billy is dead and she sees Dumont in the hospital (yes, she survived!), Madani leaves Homeland Security behind and becomes part of the CIA. In one of the final scenes of the show, she calls Frank to offer him a job, but he declines. He has a job which is shown perfectly in the final scene of the series where he shoots up a warehouse full of criminals in classic maniac Frank style.
