Polar is the Netflix action movie you’ve been waiting for

The Netflix original action movie Polar starring Mads Mikkelsen, Vanessa Hudgens and Kathryn Winnick is a must-watch on Netflix.

Need a new action movie to watch on Netflix tonight? Well, Netflix has a great new movie for you. Of course, I’m talking about their new original action movie Polar starring Mads Mikkelsen, which was just released on Friday, Jan. 25.

I don’t mean to sound too pushy. Everyone has different tastes in movies, of course. When Netflix releases a fun, low-stakes action movie like this one, I feel compelled to let the world know!

Polar is based on the Dark Horse Comics of the same name by Victor Santos. The film follows The Black Kaiser, a hitman who is nearing the age of retirement, as he tries to evade his old organization of assassins.

Mikkelsen stars in the film as The Black Kaiser, alongside Vanessa Hudgens, Kathryn Winnick, Matt Lucas, Fei Ren and more. Jonas Åkerlund directed the film.

Polar has everything you love about action movies: fast pacing, exciting sequences, blood and gore. This movie is also really funny, and that caught me off guard a little bit. It works incredibly well. There’s enough comic relief to bring this movie out of what could be a super dark story.

While the streaming network has made more than a few rom-com hits, Netflix has, well, struggled in the action movie department. Other than Bright, I can’t name another Netflix original action movie that I enjoyed. Polar, while not perfect, is an enjoyable two hours for action movie fans, and that’s refreshing. It shows Netflix knows their audience, and as a whole, their action movies are only going to get better from here. Remember, Ryan Reynolds’ Six Underground is on the way soon.

The cool thing about Polar, at least for me, is that it’s just about a dude trying to survive. Yes, he kills people for a living, but we don’t have to go down memory lane with him to figure out why he is the way he is. His motivations are simple, and that’s, again, refreshing for this genre. I want epic fight sequences in an action movie like this, and that’s exactly what Polar delivers.

Some may feel differently, but I very much enjoyed the Kill Bill-style team of assassins on the hunt for The Black Kaiser. Lucas is awesome, as is Winnick, who most will recognize from Vikings, and Ren.

It’s not the best action movie you’ll ever see, but it’ll keep you entertained! Check out Polar on Netflix this weekend!
