15. 3%

3% is Netflix’s first Brazilian original show and that is likely the only reason you aren’t a fan yet.

Set in a dystopian future where resources are scarce, only an elite 3% of the population gets to live a life of luxury in “The Offshore.” Similar to The Hunger Games, every citizen has a chance to make it out of their station on “The Inland” by competing in a series of competitions known as “The Process.”

Unlike The Hunger Games, this is not (always) a fight to the death. All of the citizens, in the year of their 20th birthday, compete in a series of challenges. Almost all of them give you a chance if you have the mental skill, although some require physical tools as well. At the end of the competition, only the top 3% will reach The Offshore.

The series follows a group of young adults who all meet during their year’s Process and quickly become rivals or friends. You’ll likely choose your favorites early. To add to the drama already created by the setup, there is a faction known as “The Resistance” determined to bring an end to the competition and the inequality it represents. At least one of our main cast is suspected to be a member of the resistance, so the game within the game is figuring out who.

3% is applauded for its great writing and intense action, but it is also a show with a diverse cast. The show uses overdubbing which is awkward when words and voices don’t line up, and many people suggest watching with subtitles instead. There are currently two seasons on Netflix with a third on the way.
