On the latest episode of Fox’s The Gifted, audiences finally learned who created the Mutant Underground. It wasn’t who we were expecting.

Season two, Episode 12 of Fox’s The Gifted, now streaming on Hulu, saw the former Atlanta cell of the Mutant Underground learning about the origin of their organization. If the characters on the show were surprised to learn who the founders were, we the audience, were even more so.

In “hoMe”, Evangeline Whedon (Erinn Ruth) organized a Mutant Summit that would bring all mutants across America together. However, Reeva Payge (Grace Byers), leader of the Inner Circle, discovered the location of the Summit and sent her new recruits to attack Evangeline and the other attendees. Lorna Dane (Emma Dumont) managed to warn Marcos Diaz (Sean Teale) and the others about the attack, though they were still too late to save anyone.

But before the tragedy took place, there was another shock for the Atlanta cell members and The Gifted audience. What we’re referring to is the creation of the Mutant Underground.

According to Morlock leader Erg (Michael Luwoye), he and Evangeline started the Mutant Underground together—not the X-Men like many fans have suspected.

After the events of 7/15, when a mutant protest turned violent, killing hundreds of people, Erg and Evangeline made the decision to found the Mutant Underground in a bid to protect mutants from the ensuing persecution. While Erg took the mutants through hidden tunnels, Evangeline coordinated with people on the surface.

Unfortunately, they were betrayed by a human ally while taking the mutants across a border, and carnage followed. Erg tried to stay behind and save the people who were hurt, but Evangeline pulled him out.

Following that attack, Erg firmly began to believe that humans couldn’t be trusted, but Evangeline wanted to continue working towards harmony with humans. The Morlocks and the Mutant Underground thus departed based on their ideological differences, much like the X-Men and the Brotherhood did in earlier years.

All things considered, it seems the two were always bound to go their separate ways. Erg tells the team that the only reason he’s going is because of the threat imposed on him.

Apparently, Evangeline threatened to share the location of the Morlock tunnels if Erg didn’t agree to meet. Such underhanded behavior from Evangeline would not have been hidden for long and would eventually have driven a wedge between her and Erg.

Lucky for Erg, Evangeline was one of the casualties of the Summit attack. There is a chance that her dragon powers kept her safe, so we may be able to learn about her vision for the future. But will it align with the rest of the Underground?

Interestingly, despite Evangeline’s alleged death, Erg doubles-down on his policy of not bringing the Morlocks into the surface world’s fight. With Blink, a bonafide surface-dweller, now joining the Morlock ranks, it will be interesting to see how long Erg can hold onto that view. The Inner Circle and the Purifiers are coming, and one gets the feeling that not even the Morlocks will be safe. We will have to find out next week on The Gifted.
