Shadow and Bone: Netflix to make new show based on Leigh Bardugo’s books

Netflix is making a Shadow and Bone TV series. The series is based on Leigh Bargugo’s Shadow and Bone trilogy and Six of Crows duology.

Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse is coming to life at Netflix. According to a report from Deadline, Netflix is making a new series, titled Shadow and Bone, that brings together Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone trilogy and Six of Crows duology.

Deadline is reporting the first season will consist of eight episodes. Birdbox writer Eric Heisserer will be the head writer and showrunner, according to the report.

We don’t know a lot about the series yet or how it will go about combining the two stories and five books into one series. We have to imagine more seasons are possible if all goes well.

Netflix also shared the synopsis of the series, via EW:

"“In a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, a young soldier uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her. Thugs, thieves, assassins and saints are at war now, and it will take more than magic to survive.”"

Obviously, this is massive news for fantasy fans. Bardugo has been one of the best YA/fantasy writers in the industry since Shadow and Bone was released in 2012. If you are unfamiliar with Bardugo’s work, we highly recommend checking out her books. We don’t get the chance to recommend books very often, so when we do, please take notice. You will not be disappointed in these books!

Shawn Levy, best known for his work on the Netflix original series Stranger Things (heard of it?), is an executive producer of Shadow and Bone. The project is under Netflix’s deal with Levy’s production company 21 Laps, according to Deadline. With Levy, Heisserer and Bardugo involved, there’s a ton of talent involved in this project.

This is also really cool for our readers because many Netflix Life twitter followers actually reached out to Netflix Life last year and picked Shadow and Bone as the one book series they’d want Netflix to make into a TV show! Now, it’s really happening! Clearly, we had nothing to do with this, but it’s still awesome for fans of the book series.

We still don’t know when to expect Shadow and Bone on Netflix. It’s probably unlikely that the new series is released this year. If I had to guess, I’d expect a 2020 release date for this series, but that’s just my prediction.
