Bird Box is Netflix’s biggest movie yet

Bird Box starring Sandra Bullock is the most popular Netflix original movie so far. The streaming network revealed almost 50 million viewers watched the film in its first week.

Bird Box starring Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes and Sarah Paulson is well on its way to being the most-watched Netflix original movie ever. Netflix announced Bird Box was watched by more than 45 million accounts over its first week (Dec. 21-28), according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.

THR also reported Nielsen confirmed the biggest opening week ever for a Netflix movie, but they varied a bit on the numbers. Nielsen said more than 26 million viewers watched Bird Box in its first seven days. Obviously, there are differences in how the views are recorded, and that’s probably why there is some variance. Netflix, clearly, has all the official data, but they rarely share said information with the public.

And, those numbers are just in the first week! It’s been almost three weeks since the film’s release, and it’s clearly growing in popularity. More and more viewers are tuning in every day, and the viewer’s conversations about the film have launched it into the mainstream conversation. That’s exactly what Netflix wants with their original movies.

This is the second year in a row that Netflix has made a splash with a big Christmas release. Last year, Bright starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton was released around the same time as Bird Box and it went on to be the most popular Netflix original film at that time. I think it’s safe to assume there will be a big Christmas release for an original film on the streaming service every year from now on.

We still haven’t heard if Netflix will make a sequel to Bird Box. Based on these numbers, one would think the streaming network would love to make it happen. There’s still much more to explore in this world as the film answered far fewer questions than it raised.
