25. The Half of It

Release Year: 2020

Directed By: Alice Wu

Starring: Leah Lewis, Daniel Diemer, Alexxis Lemire, Collin Chou, Wolfgang Novogratz, Becky Ann Baker, Catherine Curtin, Enrique Murciano

Because the majority of Netflix’s most recent teen romance movies have been through and through guilty pleasures, you might believe the bad rap they have all pretty much gotten. But right next to the more popular titles that aren’t as well-received by critics are some game-changing coming-of-age movies with high praise, like the 2020 critically acclaimed hit The Half of It.

Leah Lewis stars in The Half of It as wallflower teen Ellie Chu, who’s approached by popular jock Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer) to help him write a love letter for his crush, Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire). But Ellie starts to fall for Aster herself. The film holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, won a top honor at the Tribeca Film Festival and grabbed a nomination from the GLAAD Media Awards. As far as teen movies go, The Half of It is a critically acclaimed must-watch.
