Sun Bak has not had an easy life. Nothing can fill the void her mother’s death left in her life, and there are key moments in season 1 where we see Sun try to overcome mistakes of the past.

Despite her business and athletic accomplishments, we learn that Sun’s father – and the corporate culture – favors her younger brother, Joong-Ki. Despite displaying strength and discipline, the erratic and manipulative Bak heir is the favorite child. Sun’s mother asked her daughter to take care of her brother if she wasn’t around, and explained that Joong-Ki can’t help it that his father showered him with attention and adoration.

Sun does her best to keep her promise to her mother, but she is often haunted by her mother’s memory. When we see Sun in season 2, she’s no longer bound by a long-ago promise to her mother: after stewing in jail for months, after Joong-Ki killed their father, and after surviving multiple attempts on her life, Sun decides that she must confront her brother.

We know by the end of season 2 that Sun and Joong-Ki must have a final confrontation because both siblings can’t exist in the world; it’s either kill or be killed. In season 2, Sun has firmly put the past behind her, and with the help of her cluster, she’s on the warpath to get Joong-Ki.
