5. “I’m trying to be brave.”
This scene was shocking, and it had nothing to do with the sex scene that followed this quote.
Kala wakes up in Mumbai and decides to go for a swim. After swimming in her pool, she walks to Wolfgang’s window in Berlin. When Wolfgang asks Kala what she’s doing, Kala responds that she’s trying to be brave.
What makes this quote so important is Kala’s deliberate attempt to be who she wants to be. What Kala never does is recognize she has been brave before: undeterred and studious, Kala went to university and studied pharmacology. When other women her age were worried about finding a husband, Kala was determined to get an education.
Somewhere in season 1, Kala lost the fire and determination that helped her become a scientist. When Kala was unable to adjust to married life, she grasped for a sense of safety and Lito came roaring against Rajan with her on that patio in Positano.
Taking control of her wants and desires, a sexually unsatisfied Kala goes to Wolfgang and tells him she wants him. Kala doesn’t allow Wolfgang’s uncertainty to deter her, and she tells him what she’s feeling.
Once Kala is honest with Wolfgang (and herself) the two finally have sex, and Kalagang fans can look to this moment as the moment everything changed.
We believe Kala’s brave quote is brilliant, and a turning point for the character’s development.
