Context: Even during a tragedy, it would seem the bullies can’t help but beat up on the gang. They corner Mike and Dustin by the quarry in retaliation for the pee incident back in the school gym. One bully actually holds a knife to Dustin’s face, threatening to cut out his teeth if Mike doesn’t jump off the edge of a cliff.

Mike—God bless him—is a better friend than me and makes the jump. Mid-flight though, he discovers that he may not be tumbling to his death after all; Eleven has shown up to make him float and save the day!

Once Mike is safely back on the ground, she renders the bullies incapacitated with a quick nod and the crunch of telepathically broken bones. As they run off, a newly confident Dustin yells after them, “Yeah, that’s right! You better run! She’s our friend and she’s crazy!”

Commentary: More than anything, this moment is just fun. It’s always a plus to see Eleven flexing her powers and protecting her friends, especially since it really demonstrates the bond that has formed between her and the boys.

When Dustin taunts the bullies, you feel so pumped with him. In the same way that #WeAllAreBarb, we are all totally members of the gang. This is a moment for the little guys, the nerds, the people who are sick and tired of getting pushed around. It shows how much they’ve all grown up and their potential for protecting one another and standing up to the greater enemy later in the series.
