6. “Well I call bull on your logic ’cause you’re my best friend, too.”

Episode: 6

Context: On their way back from Lucas’ house, Mike is lamenting that Lucas should have shaken his hand in forgiveness. Dustin plays the middle-man, basically telling Mike that he’s over-reacting to what is probably simple jealousy over Eleven. “This girl shows up and starts living in your basement, and all you ever want to do is pay attention to her,” he explains.

Although Mike resists the truth, it’s clear he knows Dustin is right. He looks pretty contemplative riding on his bike, and he wraps up the conversation by telling his advice-giving friend, “He’s not my best friend.” When Dustin asserts that you can’t have more than one best friend, Mike gives us the absolute sweetest line: “Well I call bull on your logic ‘cause you’re my best friend, too.”

Commentary: I know Stranger Things is scary and nostalgic and just wild, but this is the reason we’re so invested in the story.

The Duffer Brothers have done a fabulous job at crafting believable relationships. These kids are just that: kids. They fight a monster and hang out with a telepath, but at the end of the day, they’re just three best friends trying to figure out life, love, and puberty.

When Mike tells Dustin that he’s his best friend, too, our hearts melt. It gets us back to the reason they started this quest in the first place: their friend went missing and they have an obligation to bring him back.  Their friendship gives meaning to a chaotic, terrifying universe.
