20. V.R. Troopers

Released on: 1995
Directed by: Toei Company
Starring: Brad Hawkins, Sarah Brown, Michael Bacon

There’s so much shade being thrown at the Power Rangers in this series that it’s impossible not to love it. (The tagline begins, “they’re not mighty and they can’t morph.”) Because this took place in 1995, at the beginning of the “virtual reality” and CGI revolution, the special effects left much to be desired. It’s actually kind of hilarious — like watching the first-ever release of Star Wars, prior to George Lucas CGI-ing the hell out of everything — to see one of the first-ever uses of the advanced technology that would go on to populate every film we see today. VR Troopers, too, was considered a sister series to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
